Browser Extension Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how the Alt Text Creator browser extension ("Extension") handles user data. This policy applies to the Extension available for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.

Data We Collect

The Extension processes the following data:

Website Content (Images)

When you click "Generate Alt Text," the Extension extracts the image from the webpage and sends it to your selected AI provider to generate a text description. Images are:

• Processed in real-time only when you explicitly request alt text generation
• Sent directly to the AI provider you have selected
• Not stored by the Extension
• Not transmitted to Three Things Media (except when using Alt Kit Hosted)

API Keys

If you choose to use your own API key from Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic:

• Your API key is stored locally in your browser using the browser's secure storage API
• API keys are never transmitted to Three Things Media servers
• API keys are sent directly to the respective AI provider when making requests

Alt Kit Hosted Keys

If you use the Alt Kit Hosted service, your access key is validated against our server at altkit.app. When generating alt text, images are sent to our server, which then forwards them to our AI provider for processing.

Data We Do Not Collect

The Extension does not collect:

• Personal information (name, email, address)
• Browsing history or web history
• Location data
• Passwords or authentication credentials
• Financial information
• User activity, clicks, or keystrokes
• Analytics or telemetry data

How Data Is Used

• Images are sent to AI providers solely to generate alt text descriptions
• No images are stored by the Extension after processing
• No data is used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than generating alt text

Third-Party Data Sharing

Image data is shared with the AI provider you select in the Extension settings:

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with any other third parties.

Data Storage

• API keys: Stored locally in your browser using the browser's storage API (chrome.storage.local or equivalent)
• Provider selection: Stored locally in your browser
• Images: Not stored; transmitted only during alt text generation and immediately discarded
• Generated alt text: Not stored by the Extension

Data Retention

The Extension does not retain any user data on external servers. Images are processed in real-time and immediately discarded after the AI provider returns the generated alt text. Local storage data (API keys, settings) persists until you clear it or uninstall the Extension.

Your Rights and Controls

• You can delete stored API keys at any time through the Extension settings
• You can switch AI providers at any time
• You can uninstall the Extension to remove all locally stored data
• You control when images are sent for processing by clicking the generate button

Security

The Extension is designed with security in mind. API keys are stored in the browser's secure storage and are isolated from web page content. All API communications use HTTPS encryption. The Extension only activates on supported websites and only processes images when you explicitly request it.

Children's Privacy

The Extension does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The Extension does not collect personal information from any users.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted at this URL with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
